Graphene Powder

On 26th May 2020, during the Covid 19 pandemic when the industry was reeling under severe recession, ISWP went on to do the ground-breaking ceremony of a new project involving production of Graphene Powder within its premises at Jamshedpur. This project has been undertaken along with Tata Steel and involves setting up of a 100 tons per annum Graphene Plant.

The ground-breaking ceremony was performed by ISWP Managing Director Mr Neeraj Kant in presence of ISWP Senior Leadership Team, Tata Steel Team, and ISWP Union Office Bearers including the Union President Mr Rakeshwar Pandey.

Tata Steel has been working on carbon-based nanomaterials for more than 10 years. One such material – Graphene Powder – has multiple applications. It can be used as coating to give a higher level of corrosion resistance in acidic as well as alkaline atmospheres. It can also be used as an additive to fortify several composites (polymers, fibers, various types of coatings, etc.). Such Graphene fortified composites exhibit a higher level of tensile strength, lower wear and tear propensity, and higher flexural strength.

Tata Steel has several patents in the area of carbon-based nanomaterials. Commercial production and sales of Graphene Powder would greatly enhance Tata Steel’s New Material Business portfolio.

The project would be commissioned during December 2020. The entire production operations would be handled by ISWP Team, while the Marketing & Sales of the product(s) would be done by Tata Steel. The project execution is being done jointly by teams from ISWP and Tata Steel.
